Beledweyne — Local defense forces in Hiiraan are raising alarms over the lack of federal support in their ongoing fight against al-Shabaab, warning that the insurgent group is capitalizing on gaps left by absent reinforcements.
Interior Minister Abdi Dahir Guure Karore highlighted the plight of the Ma’awiisleey militias, composed primarily of Hiiraan residents, who have been at the forefront of countering militant activities. According to Karore, these community fighters have borne the brunt of operations without receiving the promised logistical or personnel support from the national government.
“The burden of defending our towns has fallen heavily on the local population,” Karore said. “When the militias face setbacks, it is not only their loss but a reflection of the broader failure of coordination and support from federal authorities.”
The Ma’awiisleey, whose name translates to “men in sarongs,” rose in 2022 in response to escalating threats from al-Shabaab, including targeted killings of local leaders, economic extortion, and restrictions on trade. Initially backed by Somali National Army units and allied clan militias, they successfully reclaimed numerous towns and villages, earning recognition from President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as part of his broader campaign against insurgent groups.
However, as federal assistance has diminished, sustaining these gains has become increasingly difficult. Reports from residents and local officials indicate that the fighters are often under-equipped and stretched thin, creating openings for al-Shabaab to reassert control over previously liberated areas.
Karore emphasized that while the militias have demonstrated courage and dedication, long-term stability in Hiiraan requires coordinated action and resources from national authorities. “Local communities cannot shoulder this fight alone. They have risked their lives and invested their resources; it is time for meaningful support,” he said.
Security analysts note that neglecting local defense initiatives not only endangers civilian populations but also risks undoing years of progress in the region. Strengthening collaboration between community militias and federal forces is seen as essential to maintaining a sustainable front against al-Shabaab in Hiiraan.
